Russian Ambassador to Colombo, Levan S. Dagheryan, has stated that while Russia has agreed to support Sri Lanka in constructing a nuclear power plant, the island nation has not been receiving significant attention from the Russian side. He noted that discussions regarding the nuclear energy project are ongoing but have seen little progress so far.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, the Ambassador emphasized that nuclear power could serve as a sustainable and stable energy source for Sri Lanka. While he acknowledged the importance of renewable energy, he also warned that climate change and environmental challenges would make it difficult for Sri Lanka to rely solely on these sources in the long term.
He also recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally invited President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to attend the BRICS summit in Russia, but the Sri Lankan leader did not attend due to various reasons. Instead, the Sri Lankan delegation was led by the then Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ambassador further stated that Sri Lanka’s request for BRICS membership is currently under discussion and remains an important topic in diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
