MP Ravi Karunanayake has stated that he is the senior-most leader in the United National Party (UNP) after Ranil Wickremesinghe. Speaking at a media conference in Colombo, he addressed various political and economic issues, including concerns about the Electricity Board, economic policies, and party leadership.
Karunanayake expressed satisfaction with the public response regarding the Electricity Board but criticized its management, pointing out that while ordinary consumers face power cuts for late payments, the board itself fails to address larger crises efficiently. He also discussed the rising cost of paddy and emphasized the importance of market competition to protect consumers.
On the broader economic front, he highlighted the lack of discussion on expanding the economy, stating that Sri Lanka’s future depends on investment decisions made today. He pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also supports the 15% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth target he previously advocated. With rising interest rates and increasing taxes, he stressed the importance of managing debt payments while ensuring investment incentives in upcoming budgets.
Responding to remarks about his role in the UNP, Karunanayake reaffirmed his seniority within the party and dismissed criticism about leadership succession. He emphasized the need for unity within the party and urged members to work together rather than undermine each other. He also referenced past achievements, claiming that during the 100-day governance program, 91 out of 100 promises were fulfilled, whereas the current administration has yet to deliver on its commitments.
Addressing the ongoing reconciliation efforts within the UNP, he acknowledged that some individuals are trying to disrupt party unity, but insisted that the UNP remains strong. He mentioned that UNP members continue to rally around the party, and his name has been frequently mentioned as a key figure after Ranil Wickremesinghe.
When questioned about the recent vehicle issue, Karunanayake stated that economic expansions should be handled without destabilizing the rupee. He stressed that decisions should be based on what is right for the country rather than on popular opinion.
