The construction of a state-of-the-art cardiac unit at Monaragala District General Hospital has officially begun, funded by the historic Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya. The project, launched on February 16, aims to enhance cardiac care in the region and provide much-needed medical facilities for heart patients.
The three-story cardiac treatment ward is being built based on a concept proposed by Basnayake Nilame Dishan Gunasekara of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya. The foundation stone for the unit was laid at an auspicious time at 10 AM in a religious ceremony conducted by Chief Judicial Sanghanayake of Ruhunu Magam Pathtuwa, Chief Incumbent of Kataragama Sri Abhinawarama Viharaya, Shasthrapathi Kapugama Saranatissa Thero, and Maha Sangha. The Chief Incumbent of Sella Kataragama Mahasen Raja Maha Viharaya, Venerable Badalgama Jinananda Thero, also performed religious rituals and offered blessings for the project.
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Director General of Health Services Asela Gunawardena, Cardiologist of Monaragala General Hospital Ruwan Munasinghe, and representatives of the Sri Lanka Army, including Lieutenant Colonel M.R. Vidyarathna.
The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya has fully funded the construction of the facility, while the Sri Lanka Army has volunteered its labor force to execute the project. Once completed, the new cardiac unit will provide advanced treatment for heart patients in the Monaragala district, significantly improving the region’s healthcare services.
