MP Rohini Kaviratne has alleged that a group of JVP members visited the home of Amal Attanayake, a resident of Yatawatta, Matale, and threatened him for 22 minutes over a Facebook post.
According to Kaviratne, the group included former JVP Yatawatta Pradeshiya Sabha member W.G. Manjula Prasad Samaraweera and another individual named Wijeratne, who recently joined the National People’s Power (NPP) movement, also known as the Compass.
She condemned the incident, stating that progressive forces and free citizens must unite to reject the practice of delivering threats at people’s homes, reminiscent of an old village justice system where cases were arbitrarily handled outside legal institutions.
Kaviratne emphasized that every citizen has the right to freely express their opinions on social media and criticized the ruling party for attempting to silence opposition supporters and the public.
“These are the same people who came to power by spreading hate and anger, and now they are suppressing the right of the opposition and the public to remind them of their past promises on social media,” she claimed.
The incident has sparked concerns over freedom of expression and political intimidation, with opposition members urging the government to uphold democratic values and prevent harassment of citizens for expressing dissenting views online.
