Sri Lanka’s prestigious Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), a powerhouse in domestic cricket for over 125 years, is on the brink of losing its first-class status due to an underwhelming performance in the ongoing three-day club tournament.
Despite being joint champions with Police Sports Club in the previous edition, SSC has struggled significantly this season. The club, home to top national players such as Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Prabath Jayasuriya, Avishka Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, and Nuwanidu Fernando, has been unable to make an impact, with several key players missing crucial matches.
SSC’s disappointing run includes heavy defeats to teams like Kurunegala YCC and BRC, with just one outright victory in seven matches. If the trend continues, the club risks demotion from first-class status, a significant blow for an institution that has produced generations of national cricketers and played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s cricketing legacy.
Losing first-class recognition would mark a historic low for SSC, a club that has long dominated Sri Lankan cricket and served as a feeder ground for international talent. As the season progresses, cricket enthusiasts and former players will closely watch whether SSC can salvage its reputation and avoid a dramatic fall from grace.
