Chandri Peris a prominent personality and a close friend of slain journalist the late Richard De Soyza claims that the film ‘Rani’, named after the late journalist’s mother Dr. Manorani Saravanamuttu whom he knew personally too, is a film that is “Misconceived, Misinterpreted, Miscast and a big Mistake”.
Chandri’s post on his Facebook page which has since gone viral also sees multiple comments shared by others that depict similar sentiments, whilst many have expressed gratitude for his candid assessment, stating that they had considered watching the film but after reading his review have decided against it now.
Notably, “Rani” is scheduled to be screened in Los Angeles, California, on March 15, 2025.
In his critique of the film, Chandri articulates several concerns, such as:
- Misrepresentation of Characters: Chandri contends that the film portrays Dr. Manorani Saravanamuttu inaccurately, depicting her as an alcoholic and chain-smoker, which he asserts is a distortion of her true character.
- Inaccurate Personal Details: He points out discrepancies in the film, such as the portrayal of Dr. Saravanamuttu’s attire and the language used between her and her son, Richard de Zoysa, which he claims do not align with reality.
- Artistic License Concerns: Chandri criticizes the director, Asoka Handagama, for what he perceives as a misuse of artistic license, suggesting that the film fabricates events and characteristics, leading to a misleading narrative.
- Impact on Historical Perception: He expresses concern that the film’s portrayal could mislead audiences, especially younger generations, about the true events and personalities involved, effectively rewriting history to fit a particular narrative.
Chandri emphasizes the importance of accurate representation in art, especially when depicting real individuals and events, to preserve the integrity of historical narratives.

What Chandri failed to realise is that this story is a FICTITIOUS one and never set out or intended to portray the life and times of either the Late Richard De Zoysa or Dr. Manorani Saravanamuttu.
Therefore the characters are fictitious as well and in no way depict the abovementioned persons.
The events shown in the film however, are based on true events which may or may not have occured in the manner depicted
