Colombo, Sri Lanka – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented the 2025 budget proposal to Parliament today (17), revealing a significant budget deficit of Rs. 2,200 billion.
According to the budget estimates, Sri Lanka’s total revenue for 2025 is projected at Rs. 4,990 billion, while total government expenditure is expected to reach Rs. 7,190 billion. The resulting deficit of Rs. 2,200 billion highlights the financial gap that the government will need to bridge through borrowing, revenue enhancements, or expenditure control measures.
The budget aims to balance economic recovery and fiscal discipline by boosting public investment, enhancing tax revenue, and prioritizing key sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and digital transformation. The government will also focus on improving foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and restructuring public debt to manage the deficit effectively.
While addressing Parliament, President Dissanayake emphasized the need for strong fiscal reforms to ensure economic sustainability and stability in the coming years.
