
Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Local Government Elections (Special Provisions) Bill was successfully passed in Parliament with a special majority, receiving 158 votes in favor and none against during the final vote.
The second reading debate on the bill was held on February 17, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, after which 187 members voted in favor of the bill. Following its review at the committee stage, a vote was taken for the third reading, where 158 votes were cast in favor, reaffirming unanimous support for the proposed legislation.
The bill was approved without any amendments, reflecting a strong consensus among parliamentarians on the need for electoral reforms in local government elections. The absence of opposition votes highlights the broad political agreement on the proposed changes, ensuring a smoother transition in the electoral framework for local governance.
