Following the assassination of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside the Aluthkade court complex, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has announced that all lawyers will now be subject to body searches before entering court premises.
The decision comes after it was revealed that the gunman had disguised himself as a lawyer, exploiting the lack of security checks on legal professionals. The Acting IGP emphasized that immediate steps will be taken to implement these security measures, ensuring that all individuals entering court premises are thoroughly screened.
To facilitate these measures, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has been requested to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. Additionally, the police are seeking approval from relevant authorities to deploy armed officers within court premises to further enhance security.
Meanwhile, several police teams are actively investigating the case, working to track down and apprehend the suspects who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Authorities are now focused on strengthening security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
