The government has pledged to take strict action against escalating crime and underworld activities, following the shooting of notorious criminal Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside the Aluthkade courthouse.
Speaking in Parliament today, Chief Organizer of the Government Party, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, assured that the government will not tolerate the rise of underworld violence and is actively implementing measures to curb shootings and organized crime.
As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Defense has already recalled a large number of firearms issued by the government, and investigations are ongoing regarding their distribution and misuse. Additionally, the government has launched operations to extradite criminals who have fled to India and Dubai, further tightening its grip on international crime networks linked to Sri Lanka.
Minister Jayatissa’s remarks came in response to MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, who raised concerns about the rising number of shootings and the deteriorating security situation in the country. Jayasekara noted that over 70 shootings have been reported so far this year, urging Parliament and law enforcement to take immediate action.
The government insists that it has already implemented several initiatives to combat violent crime and remains committed to strengthening law enforcement efforts to restore public safety.
