
Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya has been officially elected as the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), succeeding the previous leadership in a pivotal transition for the country’s legal community.
The inauguration ceremony took place in Colombo today (19), where Amarasuriya formally assumed his new role. As the head of Sri Lanka’s foremost legal body, he will be responsible for representing the interests of the legal profession, addressing key judicial concerns, and advocating for the rule of law and justice system reforms.
Amarasuriya, a respected legal professional with extensive experience in law and governance, has previously served in various capacities within the BASL and is recognized for his contributions to legal education, constitutional law, and judicial advocacy.
His election comes at a time when Sri Lanka’s legal system faces several challenges, including judicial independence, constitutional amendments, and human rights concerns. Under his leadership, the BASL is expected to play a crucial role in shaping legal policies, defending the rights of lawyers, and ensuring the protection of democratic values in the country.
