In a tragic event, Australian authorities have commenced the euthanasia of approximately 90 false killer whales stranded on a remote beach in Tasmania.
The pod of 157 whales beached near Arthur River in the island’s northwest, with many perishing shortly after the incident. Rescue efforts were hindered by the site’s inaccessibility and adverse ocean conditions, making it impossible to refloat the surviving whales.
Marine biologist Kris Carlyon described the decision to euthanize as “tough” but necessary to prevent further suffering. This marks the first mass stranding of false killer whales in Tasmania in over five decades.
