Investigations have revealed shocking details about the assassination of underworld leader Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who was shot dead in Courtroom No. 5 of the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court. The killing, which stunned the legal and law enforcement communities, was reportedly carried out under a contract worth Rs. 1.5 crore, orchestrated by an underworld figure based in Dubai.
According to police sources, the assassin was initially paid Rs. 2 lakh as an advance, with the promise of receiving the remaining amount after the job was completed. However, in a shocking turn of events, the full payment was never made. Instead, it appears that the same individuals who contracted the hit later tipped off security forces, leading to the killer’s dramatic capture.
Following the execution of the murder inside the courthouse, the suspect attempted to flee the country. He was tracked down in Kalpitiya, where he was reportedly making arrangements to escape to India by sea. Acting on intelligence, law enforcement officers launched a surprise operation, arresting him before he could leave Sri Lankan waters.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect was a heavy user of the drug ‘Ice’ (methamphetamine). It is believed that his involvement in contract killings and other underworld activities was primarily to fund his drug addiction. Officials suspect that he may have been involved in multiple other crimes, possibly linked to the same underworld network that ordered Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s execution.
When police arrested the suspect in Palaviya, Puttalam, he attempted to mislead them by presenting a lawyer’s identity card, falsely claiming to be a legal professional. However, officers, already suspicious of his behavior, conducted further verification, which quickly exposed his deception.
Police continue to investigate the larger network behind this murder, including the role of Dubai-based criminal elements and whether other assassinations may have been planned using similar tactics.
These events are like stories from best-seller crime thriller books, with drug syndicates, double crossing and betrayal. The police would have had a hand in the drama as there are many criminal elements working as policemen.
