MP Jagath Manuwarna has stated that if the digital ID card system had already been implemented, the recent Aluthkade courtroom murder could have been prevented.
Speaking in Parliament, Manuwarna noted that this is not the first instance of an accused being murdered inside a courtroom. He recalled a similar incident in 1994, when Dhammika Amarasinghe was assassinated inside a court by an individual disguised as a lawyer.
He emphasized that while efforts have been made to end the culture of courtroom murders, such incidents continue to occur, suggesting that past failures still haunt the present.
The MP also pointed out that the Aluthkade assassin used a fake lawyer’s ID card to gain access, stating that had the proposed digital ID system been in place, it would have been impossible for the killer to hide his identity.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over security lapses in courtrooms, prompting discussions on strengthening identity verification measures to prevent such breaches in the future.
