Dr. Ven. Gallelle Sumanasiri Thero has announced his resignation from the post of Chancellor of Rajarata University, citing concerns over internal conflicts within the Buddhist clergy (Sangha) and public controversy following his appointment.
In a formal letter addressed to Presidential Secretary Sanath Kumanayake, the Thero stated that his appointment had offended certain factions within the religious community, leading to discontent and criticism. He acknowledged that while the position was offered to him by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in good faith, it has unintentionally caused division within the Sangha.
The letter also highlighted that lay supporters of the former Chancellor have been actively publishing negative and unfair statements in the media. These actions, he explained, have further escalated tensions and created an atmosphere of conflict and distrust. In an effort to maintain unity and prevent further discord within the Buddhist monastic community, Dr. Ven. Sumanasiri Thero stated that he had taken the decision to voluntarily step down.
Dr. Ven. Gallelle Sumanasiri Thero was officially appointed as Chancellor of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on February 10, 2024. His resignation, which comes shortly after his appointment, signals the ongoing sensitivity surrounding religious leadership positions within academic institutions and highlights the influence of both clergy and lay communities in these decisions.
With his resignation, the position of Chancellor of Rajarata University remains vacant, raising speculation about the next appointee and whether the government will reconsider its approach to such appointments in the future.
