Despite reservoirs filling up rapidly, hydropower production in Sri Lanka is experiencing a decline due to prevailing dry weather conditions.
On February 20, the Ceylon Electricity Board’s hydropower plants contributed only 21% of the national electricity demand, reflecting a significant drop in generation levels.
To compensate for this decline, coal and diesel power plants have been required to increase their contribution, supplying 65% of the national electricity demand yesterday.
Meanwhile, solar power generation contributed approximately 7.7% of the total daily electricity production.
With the ongoing dry weather affecting hydropower output, authorities may need to rely more on fuel-based power sources to maintain electricity supply in the coming weeks.
