Former Provincial Councilor Waruna Rajapaksa has claimed that the government is preparing to appoint a new Finance Minister by the end of April.
In a video released on his social media channel, Rajapaksa stated that a Member of Parliament elected from the National List of the National People’s Power (NPP) is expected to resign, making way for the new Finance Minister to enter Parliament.
He further revealed that the individual set to assume the role is a well-known businessman, whose name has not yet been disclosed. According to Rajapaksa, this person was initially offered the position of Secretary to the Ministry of Finance but has since been considered for the Finance Minister post itself.
Rajapaksa, who is currently serving as a Constituency Organizer for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and was previously a Western Provincial Council member for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), did not provide further details about the alleged appointment.
With speculation growing, the government has yet to confirm or deny these claims, leaving room for questions about political maneuvering and the potential influence of corporate figures in governance.
