India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has fined BBC World Service INR 34.4 million ($397,980) for violating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations.
Additionally, the Federal Investigation Agency has imposed a INR 11.4 million fine on three of its directors after adjudication under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), following an order issued against BBC World Service.
The ED launched its probe into the BBC in April 2023, two months after tax officials raided the broadcaster’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai. The investigation stems from alleged irregularities in foreign funding and financial transactions related to the BBC’s operations in India.
