Parliament today decided to remove a controversial statement made by Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage regarding Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kavirathna from the official Hansard record.
The incident occurred when Deputy Minister Hewage criticized MP Kavirathna during his speech and referred to her by a different surname, which immediately sparked outrage in the House.
SJB MP Harsha de Silva strongly objected to the remark and demanded that it be struck from the parliamentary record. His objection led to a heated exchange between him and Deputy Minister Hewage, with both engaging in a verbal confrontation.
During the altercation, Nalin Hewage defended himself, claiming that he had referred to a different person with a similar name and had not intended to insult MP Kavirathna. However, tensions only settled after Chief Organizer of the Government Party, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, formally apologized on behalf of the Deputy Minister.
Minister Nalinda Jayatissa later confirmed that the offensive statement would be removed from the Hansard report, marking the end of the parliamentary dispute.
