Defense Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuiyakontha emphasized that while there may be a slight uptick in underworld activities at present, the government is laying the groundwork for a future in which such criminal operations will be virtually unimaginable. He noted that, as of now, underworld gangs no longer enjoy any political patronage or protection, and swift legal measures have been implemented to ensure that any illicit behavior is met with the full force of the law.
He further detailed that, upon assuming office, the government launched an immediate audit of all firearms that had been issued without proper oversight. This rigorous review has led to the recovery of nearly all such weapons—with only about 48 remaining unaccounted for—while the vast majority have been securely transferred to the Ministry of Defense. This move is seen as a critical step in dismantling the channels through which illegal arms have historically fueled criminal activities.
In addition, the current administration has put a stop to the issuance of illegal weapons, firmly stating that no further unauthorized arms deals will take place. Recognizing that national security extends beyond external threats, the Defense Secretary highlighted the responsibility of all branches of government to address internal security challenges. Enhanced intelligence efforts and the constant readiness of the tri-services ensure that any potential threats can be quickly neutralized.
Ultimately, while acknowledging the current rise in underworld activities, the Defense Secretary assured the public that these measures will progressively reduce such activities to a minimal level. The long-term goal is to create a society where the very notion of engaging in criminal underworld operations becomes irrelevant, thereby establishing a safer, more secure future for everyone.
