Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne has stated that the National People’s Power government aims to bring the country to a satisfactory economic position by the time it presents its fourth budget. Speaking during the budget debate in Parliament, he highlighted the government’s commitment to financial discipline and reduced privileges for politicians.
Karunaratne pointed out that ministerial motorcades, once a common sight, are no longer seen today. He further emphasized that none of the ministers in his government use official residences, and even the lowest-ranking MPs have faced significant cuts in privileges under the current administration.
Addressing concerns about the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Deputy Minister clarified that while his government did not originally seek assistance from the IMF, it inherited economic policies that were already tied to IMF conditions, leaving them with no option but to navigate within that framework.
With four more budgets left to be presented during this administration, Karunaratne expressed confidence that by the fourth budget, the government will have achieved economic stability and placed the country in a satisfactory position for all.
