The Sri Lankan defence authorities were on Tuesday directed to sack para-military personnel who are known to be involved in activities beyond their mandate.
In a statement released on Tuesday the Ministry of Defence has also called for a report on the errant activities of such persons attached to the Civil Security Department who are known to operate beyond their assigned duties.
State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon has directed the Director General of the Civil Security Department Air Vice Marshal Roshan Biyanwila, to investigate and submit a comprehensive report on whether members of the CDF assigned for maintenance duties at places of worship, agricultural activities, maintenance of elephant fences and certain duties of various institutions are involved in activities outside of their official duties.
Further, instructions have been given to immediately terminate the service of the personnel who are found guilty in breach of official instructions, the statement said.
The CDF also knows as Home Guards was created some three decades ago to guard villages against attacks from the now defunct Libation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The LTTE and their leadership that were fighting for a so-called independent homeland in the north and east of the island nation was decapitated in a massive military onslaught in 2009 that saw an end to the bloody and protracted 30-year-old conflict.
