The current government has put doctors in a very difficult situation through its budget, unlike any previous government, according to Dr. Rukshan Bellana, Chairman of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and Deputy Director of the Colombo National Hospital.
Dr. Bellana expressed his concerns, stating that the government, which received significant support from doctors, has taken steps to overlook the rank and importance of medical professionals when preparing the budget. He emphasized that no previous government has placed public servants in such a challenging position.
He explained that more than 80% of doctors supported the appointment of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government, and approximately 15 doctors are currently serving as members of parliament under the Malima government.
Dr. Bellana highlighted that the gross salaries of doctors have been reduced under the new budget. He elaborated that previously, the additional service allowance for doctors was set at 1/80th of the basic salary, and the holiday allowance was set at 1/20th of the basic salary. However, under the current budget, these allowances have been further reduced to 1/120th and 1/30th of the basic salary, respectively.
Dr. Rukshan Bellana, in his capacity as Chairman of the GMOA, further emphasized that the association is prepared to support any actions taken by doctors in response to the difficult situation created by the government. He added that the GMOA stands ready to take necessary steps to protect the interests of medical professionals affected by these budgetary measures.
