Minuwangoda, February 26 – A violent underworld feud has intensified as a close associate of Kehelbaddara Padme, the alleged mastermind behind the assassination of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, was shot and injured in Minuwangoda this morning. The attack, suspected to be a retaliatory strike by Sanjeewa’s loyalists, comes exactly seven days after his murder.
According to police reports, a 36-year-old man, believed to be a childhood friend of Padme and linked to his criminal operations, was ambushed in the Patthaduwana area of Minuwangoda by a group of gunmen. The assailants opened fire before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim with gunshot wounds to his leg and arm. He was rushed to Gampaha General Hospital, where medical staff confirmed his injuries are not life-threatening.
Authorities believe the attack was orchestrated as part of an ongoing power struggle between underworld factions. Following Sanjeewa’s assassination, his close associates publicly vowed to take revenge on anyone connected to Padme, escalating tensions among the rival gangs.
Ganemulla Sanjeewa, a well-known underworld figure, was fatally shot last week in what investigators suspect was a targeted execution planned by Padme’s network. Sanjeewa had long been involved in organized crime, including extortion, drug trafficking, and contract killings. His murder marked a significant shift in the underworld hierarchy, prompting his loyalists to seek vengeance.
Kehelbaddara Padme, also a notorious gang leader, has been at the center of several criminal investigations and is known for his involvement in violent territorial disputes. Intelligence sources indicate that his faction has been gaining influence, which may have motivated the attack on Sanjeewa.
The resurgence of gang-related shootings has raised concerns among residents in Minuwangoda and surrounding areas. Locals fear that the ongoing vendetta will result in further violence, potentially endangering innocent bystanders. Authorities have increased police presence in high-risk zones to prevent further attacks and maintain law and order.
Despite the severity of today’s attack, no arrests have been made so far. However, Minuwangoda Police, alongside special investigation teams, are conducting extensive inquiries to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. Security forces are also monitoring movements of known underworld operatives to prevent further retaliatory violence.
Sri Lanka has witnessed a series of underworld killings in recent years, often linked to power struggles among criminal syndicates. As rival factions attempt to eliminate competition, the battle for dominance continues, with new figures rising to prominence following the downfall of others. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, fearing that today’s shooting may trigger another cycle of revenge attacks.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to dismantle these organized crime networks and curb the wave of gang-related violence.
