The latest attempt to extradite former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran to Sri Lanka has failed, as Singaporean authorities have once again refused to hand him over.
Responding to a request from Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department, Singapore has informed that, under its laws, a Singaporean citizen cannot be extradited to Sri Lanka.
Mahendran, who was born in Sri Lanka but later obtained Singaporean citizenship, served as the Governor of the Central Bank during the Yahapalana government. He is accused of causing a loss of Rs. 10 billion to the Sri Lankan government through the Central Bank bond scandal.
This is not the first time Sri Lanka has sought his extradition, as previous attempts by the Attorney General’s Department were also rejected by Singaporean authorities.
