Microsoft is reportedly set to permanently shut down Skype in May, marking the end of a 22-year journey for one of the world’s first and most influential video conferencing platforms.
Skype’s Official Retirement Confirmed
According to a report by XDA, Microsoft’s latest Skype for Windows preview includes a message confirming the planned retirement:
“Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available.”
This announcement officially ends years of speculation regarding when Microsoft would phase out the platform. Since its acquisition of Skype in 2011, Microsoft has gradually reduced the platform’s relevance by removing key functionalities and integrating alternative services.
A Decline Marked by Competition and Internal Shifts
Originally launched in 2003, Skype became a pioneer in online communication, allowing users across the world to make voice and video calls over the internet. However, Microsoft’s management of the platform saw several strategic shifts that led to its gradual decline:
- 2013: Microsoft shut down Windows Live Messenger, directing users to Skype instead.
- 2015: The company attempted to integrate Skype into Windows 10, but the project lasted only nine months before being abandoned.
- 2017: The launch of Microsoft Teams introduced internal competition, as Teams was built to compete with Slack and serve as an enterprise communication tool.
With Teams gaining popularity, Skype’s role diminished, leading to continuous speculation about its eventual shutdown.
Users Will Be Migrated to Microsoft Teams
As part of the transition, Skype users will be prompted to move to Microsoft Teams. A message in the preview version of Skype states:
“Continue your calls and chats in Teams.”
Additionally, users will see a notification informing them that some of their contacts have already moved to Teams Free, suggesting that Microsoft has already begun facilitating the migration.
Global Impact and Local Usage
Skype has been widely used not only for personal and business communication but also in public services across various countries. In Sri Lanka, for instance, Skype technology has been utilized in court proceedings, allowing remote parties to participate in legal cases.
The discontinuation of Skype will require many organizations and individuals to adapt to new communication platforms, with Microsoft Teams positioned as the official alternative.
