Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Sri Lankan passport has been ranked among the world’s weakest passports, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.
The rankings place Singapore at the top as the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 195 destinations. Japan and South Korea share the second position, allowing their citizens to travel to 193 countries without prior visas.
At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan ranks as the weakest passport in the world, providing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to only 27 destinations. Sri Lanka stands just eight spots above Afghanistan, grouped with Sudan and Iran, further highlighting its limited global mobility.
The Henley Passport Index is widely recognized as an authoritative ranking of global passport strength, measuring the number of destinations passport holders can access without a visa or with visa-on-arrival. Sri Lanka’s position in the rankings underscores the challenges faced by its citizens in international travel, with strict visa requirements imposed by many countries.
As countries in the region continue to strengthen their global access, Sri Lanka’s ranking raises concerns over the need for improved diplomatic efforts and stronger international relations to enhance travel freedom for its citizens.
