A Sri Lankan naval rating was taken into custody after he is alleged to have stabbed to death a colleague after a bout of alcohol along with two others, the Navy said on Thursday.
The incident took place at the naval barracks in the eastern port city of Trincomalee some 320 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo, a senior official said.
He said the 42-year-old victim succumbed shortly after admission to the Trincomalee Government Hospital.
Initial investigations have revealed that the victim, the suspect along with two other off-duty navy personnel had consumed alcohol inside their barracks when the incident took place following a heated argument, the official added.
Both the victim and the suspect are residents in the central town of Matale in the central province, according to police who have been tasked to investigate the alleged homicide.
