The government has reduced the prices of goods by 14% over the past three months and plans to lower them even further, ensuring affordability for consumers, said Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe.
He assured that there will be no shortage of essential food items during the upcoming festive season, as the government is prepared to maintain a steady supply. The minister emphasized that food distribution through Sathosa will bypass intermediaries, allowing both consumers and manufacturers to benefit directly.
Additionally, the government plans to establish a Wholesale Trading Corporation to streamline food supply under three major markets. In collaboration with Indian trading companies, Sri Lanka will import essential goods such as potatoes, onions, sugar, and lentils to ensure stable prices and availability.
Despite Sathosa incurring a loss of LKR 19.8 billion under previous administrations, efforts are underway to transform it into a profitable institution that meets consumer needs. This initiative was discussed with key ministers during the recent Food Security Committee meeting, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing essential goods at affordable prices.
