Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, announced that new education reforms will be launched in 2026, with preparations taking place in 2025.
She made this statement during the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education meeting in Parliament, which was held under her chairmanship. Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madura Seneviratne, also participated in the discussions.
The Prime Minister explained that the new education reforms will be implemented under five key pillars, including the introduction of a new syllabus, human resource development, infrastructure development, public education, and proper assessment and evaluation. These reforms will initially be introduced in 2026 for students in the first and sixth grades.
During the meeting, discussions were held on the establishment of six sub-committees affiliated with the Ministerial Consultative Committee. These sub-committees will focus on education reforms, shortage of human and physical resources in schools, admission of students to intermediate grades, establishment of an Education Council, Higher Education Division, and Skill Education Division.
The meeting also addressed national and provincial-level issues related to the education sector. Responding to concerns raised by the committee members, Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized that budgetary allocations for education in this year’s budget will be prioritized to reduce disparities between schools, conduct physical inspections for infrastructure development, resume suspended construction projects, and renovate unsafe school premises.
The meeting was attended by Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament, and officials from institutions under the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.
