Sri Lanka has been identified as one of the countries with the lowest terrorist threat in the world, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2025. The ranking is based on an analysis of global terrorism trends in 2024, conducted by the International Institute for Economics and Peace.
The Global Terrorism Index evaluates 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population, to assess the impact of terrorism. According to the latest report, Burkina Faso ranks as the most terror-affected country, followed by Pakistan and Syria.
Sri Lanka has been ranked 100th in the index, marking a significant improvement from 36th place in 2023—a 64-place drop in terrorist risk ranking. This makes Sri Lanka the most improved country in South Asia in terms of reducing terrorism threats.
The report also highlighted that Sri Lanka and Bhutan are the only South Asian nations that have not reported any terrorist attacks in the past five years. Since 2019, terrorist threats in Sri Lanka have consistently declined.
