Colombo, Sri Lanka – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Sampur power plant project during his two-day visit to Sri Lanka, starting on April 4.
Modi’s visit comes in response to an invitation extended by Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake during his recent visit to India. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in the energy sector.
As part of the discussions between the leaders of both nations, an agreement has been reached between the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to implement the Sampur power project. The agreement also includes plans to expand the plant’s capacity to meet Sri Lanka’s growing energy needs.
The Sampur power plant, a long-discussed initiative, is expected to play a key role in Sri Lanka’s energy security and economic development, further reinforcing India’s support for infrastructure projects in the country.
