Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged the government to take urgent measures to stop the rising wave of brutal killings across the country. Speaking in Parliament, he called on authorities to seek guidance from experts to curb the growing violence.
He criticized the breakdown in public security, pointing out that the woman who planned a murder at the courthouse, as well as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), remain in hiding, with law enforcement unable to locate them.
Premadasa highlighted a series of violent incidents, including the brutal murder of the former Boossa Prison superintendent, multiple shootings in Weliweriya and Gampaha, and the discovery of a murdered youth in Agunukola Pelessa. He also pointed to human rights violations reported in Meegahakivula, Taldena, and Muthur.
He stated that public security has deteriorated, holding the government responsible for the crisis. He warned that brutality, violence, gang activities, and terrorism have gripped society, likening the situation to the creation of a “three-headed Kandy” in the country.
Emphasizing the need for a national program to stop the culture of murder, Premadasa assured that the opposition would fully support such an initiative.
He further questioned how the rule of law could prevail if the former IGP remains missing, urging the government to provide concrete solutions instead of trivializing these grave security concerns.
