A group of voters from the Nuwara Eliya Municipal area staged a protest on March 14, urging former Mayor Mahinda Dodampagamage to re-enter politics and contest in the upcoming local government elections for the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.
The protest took place in front of Mahinda Dodampagamage’s tourist hotel in Nuwara Eliya, where religious leaders and residents gathered, expressing their belief that he is the only leader capable of developing the tourism industry in the region. They praised his past tenure, stating that he had spearheaded numerous development projects in Nuwara Eliya during his time as Mayor.
Protesters voiced concerns that the city is declining due to his absence from politics, urging him to contest the election independently, without aligning with any political party, in order to restore the city’s growth.
Addressing the demonstrators, Mahinda Dodampagamage stated that he currently has no intention of re-entering politics but acknowledged the requests from voters. He assured them that he would carefully consider their appeal and make an announcement in the future.
