The Postal Trade Union Front has launched a strike today, demanding solutions to seven key issues, including the payment of overdue overtime allowances.
According to Chinthaka Bandara, the co-convener of the trade union front, the strike will be carried out as a token strike from 4:00 pm today until March 18.
One of the primary demands of the postal workers is addressing the severe shortage of 7,500 employees in the department, which has significantly hampered daily operations.
“Currently, there are 7,500 vacancies in the Postal Department, including among junior staff. The department is struggling to maintain even its minimum service levels. In some areas, letters are delivered only once every two days,” Bandara stated.
A last-minute discussion with the Minister has been scheduled an hour before the strike officially begins. The trade union has agreed to attend the meeting, but Bandara emphasized that the continuation of the strike will depend on the outcome of the discussions.
“If a fair and proper solution is not found after the strike on the 17th and 18th, we will have no choice but to escalate our trade union action to an even more severe level,” Bandara warned.
