Colombo, March 17 – The Court of Appeal has denied a request for an interim order preventing the arrest of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who is wanted in connection with the Weligama hotel shooting incident.
The court further issued a directive instructing the police to carry out the arrest warrant issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court in accordance with legal procedures.
A two-judge bench of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice (Acting President) Mohamed Laffar, delivered this decision following a writ petition filed by Tennakoon, in which he sought an order to halt his arrest.
In a significant legal setback for Tennakoon, the Court of Appeal dismissed his petition with costs, reinforcing the earlier decision by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
With this ruling, the police are now legally bound to execute the arrest of the controversial IGP, who remains at large despite multiple allegations and legal proceedings against him.
