Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, responding to former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa, stated that Sri Lanka is still paying a significant fine for an incident that occurred in the past.
Addressing Parliament, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage revealed that the Sports Ministry has been paying a fine of £5,000 per year due to the involvement of Fijian players in a rugby match in 2014.
“In May 2014, when Rajapaksa sons were playing rugby, three Fijian players were brought in to represent Sri Lanka in a tournament held in Colombo. They were brought in to secure a win. Years later, when World Rugby discovered the violation, they fined Sri Lanka £50,000. We are still paying this fine,” the Sports Minister said.
Minister Gamage made this statement in response to ridicule over his recent visit to a supermarket instead of monitoring sports activities.
Speaking in Parliament, MP Namal Rajapaksa requested the Sports Minister to focus on issues such as the quality of food provided to national athletes in the hostel managed by the Sports Ministry.
