A Los Angeles County jury has ordered Starbucks to pay $50 million (£38.47 million) in damages to Michael Garcia after he suffered severe burns from a hot cup of coffee he received from the renowned beverage and food chain.
The incident occurred in February 2020 when Michael Garcia was driving to a Starbucks store and ordered a drink. However, the Starbucks employee failed to properly secure the cup, causing it to fall on Garcia’s hip and resulting in severe burns to his genitals.
The court found Starbucks 100% liable for not ensuring the safe delivery of the coffee cup to the customer, leading to the decision to award the substantial compensation.
Following the verdict, Starbucks announced its intention to appeal the ruling, stating that the amount of compensation awarded is excessively high.
