The Sri Lankan government has announced a plan to provide electronic devices to Members of Parliament (MPs) for their official use and ownership during their term, according to a circular issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
The plan includes providing computers, photocopiers, fax machines, and mobile phones to the current MPs based on their requirements. The value of these devices will be depreciated and charged on an installment basis after purchase. Once the payments are completed, the ownership of the devices will be transferred to the respective MP.
Under this proposal, an amount of Rs. 800,000 will be allocated for each MP’s term. Previously, MPs were allowed to receive one million rupees in two installments of Rs. 500,000 each during their time in parliament.
The new policy aims to improve efficiency and accessibility for MPs while ensuring proper financial accountability through the installment-based payment system.
