The controversial Perpetual Treasuries Bond Scam continues to stir political turmoil as Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe revealed in Parliament that the company owned by Arjuna Aloysius has allegedly made payments totaling Rs. 1.8 billion to approximately 108 individuals.
According to Minister Samarasinghe, these payments were made through cheques, raising further suspicion and scrutiny over the involvement of high-profile political figures in the ongoing scandal.
Deputy Minister Harshana Suriyapperuma further stated that politicians, including MPs Sujeewa Senasinghe, Dayasiri Jayasekara, and Harshana Rajakaruna, were recipients of funds from Perpetual Treasuries Company.
These revelations were made while addressing comments from MP Harsha de Silva, who had previously criticized certain MPs from the Yahapalana government over their alleged involvement and the footnotes in the reports of the Presidential Commission that investigated the bond scam.
“MP Harsha de Silva should not be singled out and made revelations,” said Deputy Minister Suriyapperuma, suggesting that the inquiry should be comprehensive and unbiased.
In response, Dr. Harsha de Silva clarified that during the period under investigation, the mobile phones of COPE (Committee on Public Enterprises) committee members were thoroughly examined. He emphasized that several members, including himself and former MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, had not received any phone calls, text messages, or WhatsApp messages connected to the scandal.
The allegations continue to unfold, raising more questions about the depth of political involvement in one of Sri Lanka’s most controversial financial scandals.
