A disturbing incident occurred in the Rilpola area of Badulla yesterday morning (19th), where a three-wheeler overturned, leaving a 22-year-old mother of one and the driver seriously injured. Both were rushed to the Badulla Teaching Hospital with leg injuries, according to the Badulla Police.
Investigations reveal that the woman was waiting by the roadside when the three-wheeler driver offered her a ride home. During the journey, the driver reportedly stopped the vehicle after hearing a noise from the rear wheel. Instead of inspecting the vehicle, he allegedly moved to the back seat and forcefully hugged the woman.
The woman informed the police that the driver attempted to sexually assault her. Her screams for help attracted the attention of passersby, prompting the driver to panic and hastily restart the three-wheeler.
As the woman attempted to escape by jumping out of the moving vehicle, the three-wheeler lost control and overturned. Both the woman and the driver suffered leg injuries from the accident.
Police have recovered an undergarment believed to belong to the woman from the scene, which is now part of the investigation. Further inquiries are underway.
