An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit the southern Indian Ocean on Wednesday, but this will not affect Sri Lanka, officials in Colombo said Wednesday.
According to the US Geological Survey the earthquake, with its epicenter in the southern Indian Ocean, struck at around 0700GMT.
Officials with the Sri Lankan Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said that the earthquake has been recorded nearly 800 km Southeast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean and that there was no danger to the island nation.
The earthquake came days after a major earthquake of 6.4 magnitude hit the South Asian nation of Nepal. Around 150 people were killed following the strong tremor in the landlocked Himalayan nation.
