Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe is facing mounting criticism over contradictory statements made in Parliament about a New Year relief package provided by the government to beneficiaries of relief assistance.
The issue was raised in Parliament by MP DV Chanaka, who played a video recording of the Minister’s statements made on two separate days. In the recording, Minister Samarasinghe claimed yesterday that the relief package would include two Samaposha packets, but today he stated that it would instead include two Suposha packets.
The confusion triggered strong criticism on social media, particularly regarding the apparent involvement of a private company in the relief package instead of the government’s Thriposha product. Concerns were also raised about a high-ranking executive from the Samaposha Manufacturing Company currently holding a position at the Sathosa Institute.
The incident has sparked allegations of potential conflict of interest and negligence on the Minister’s part, with many questioning the transparency of the relief package distribution process.
