Former MP Champika Ranawaka has alleged that the expenditure of President Anura Dissanayake’s government is one hundred million rupees more than the expenses incurred by the administrations of Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Speaking at a public meeting held in preparation for the upcoming local government elections, Ranawaka criticized the current government’s extravagant spending despite earlier promises of simplicity and frugality. He pointed out that the President had previously pledged to avoid large vehicle parades and not take food from Parliament, but the reality has been quite the opposite.
Ranawaka further claimed that even more expenses are being incurred to protect what he described as the false modesty and pretense of humility displayed by some politicians.
He particularly highlighted the President’s recent visit to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, where despite being accompanied by only one escort vehicle, more than ten thousand police officers and hundreds of security vehicles were reportedly deployed along surrounding roads for his security.
The excessive security measures have drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning whether the government is truly living up to its promises of reducing unnecessary spending.
