Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, has addressed the delay in launching billionaire businessman Elon Musk’s ‘Starlink’ internet service in Sri Lanka.
He stated that the delay is due to Starlink’s failure to provide the necessary facilities to ensure data security and communication information required by the Sri Lankan government.
“We require Starlink to provide us with a dashboard. We need to investigate our security measures. Once that facility is made available, their service can go live,” Weeraratne explained.
He further mentioned that when an Internet Service Provider (ISP) operates in Sri Lanka, necessary security measures must be in place if customers misuse the facility. Therefore, the ability to access relevant data for legal action is essential, as stipulated in the agreement with Starlink.
“The problem is that they have not provided it yet, so we cannot go live. The delay is on their side,” he added.
