Minister of Agriculture K.D. Lal Kantha has assured the public that there will be no rice shortage during the upcoming festive season, emphasizing his commitment to promoting local rice cultivation over imports.
During a discussion with journalists, the Minister stated that while his primary objective is to ensure the country’s rice needs are met through domestic production, he is prepared to import rice if a significant shortage occurs. According to him, importing rice will only be considered as a temporary measure to stabilize the market and meet consumer demand.
Minister Lal Kantha recalled that previous administrations resorted to rice imports when shortages were encountered. However, his approach remains firmly focused on enhancing local production, aiming for self-sufficiency in rice supply.
He also noted that the ongoing issues related to rice cultivation are partly a result of the fertilizer crisis experienced during the administration of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Despite these challenges, the Minister expressed confidence in resolving the issues to maintain a steady rice supply for the country.
