The Sri Lankan authorities on Thursday ordered a thorough probe after a female Grade One student was crushed to death underneath a school wall in the commercial capital of Colombo, officials said.
They said the incident took place at a State-operated mixed school and that five other students were also injured, one critically.
Sri Lanka’s Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has instructed high educational officials to carry out a thorough probe and submit a report at the very earliest.
However following the incident enraged parents and residents stormed the school and assaulted the staff and the principal had to seek medical attention.
The situation was brought under control with the intervention of the police and the school was closed until November 20, the officials said.
