Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Eranga Gunasekara, has been officially named as a suspect in connection with the attack on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence located on Fifth Lane, Kollupitiya, which took place on July 9, 2022. The incident also involves allegations of obstructing the fire brigade that attempted to extinguish the fire during the attack.
When the case was taken up yesterday at the Fort Magistrate’s Court, Mr. Gunasekara did not make an appearance. His lawyer informed the court that the Deputy Minister was unable to attend due to health reasons.
Additionally, legal representatives for several other suspects cited similar reasons, stating their clients were unable to appear in court.
Despite these explanations, the Magistrate issued arrest warrants for four individuals involved in the incident. The court has also ordered Deputy Minister Gunasekara to appear at the next hearing to provide his statement.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine the extent of involvement by those accused of participating in the attack and interfering with emergency response efforts.
