A quiet yet intense battle has reportedly begun among several senior Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) of the Sri Lanka Police Department as they vie for the position of the thirty-seventh Inspector General of Police (IGP).
This situation has emerged following the submission of a confidence motion to Parliament seeking the removal of Mr. Deshabandhu Tennakoon from his position as IGP. As a result, the contest for succession has intensified within the police department.
Among those in contention for the prestigious post are senior DIGs Priyantha Weerasuriya, Lalith Pathinayake, Sanjeevamedawatte, Ranmal Kodithuwakku, Sanjeeva Dharmaratne, Kithsiri Jayalath, and M.G.R.S. Chaminda, who is currently serving as the Acting IGP.
It is noteworthy that the current Acting IGP has a limited time remaining before retirement from public service, adding further complexity to the selection process.
The competition for the post of IGP reflects not only the individual ambitions of the senior officers but also broader implications for the future leadership of the Sri Lanka Police Department.
