Former Sri Lankan cricketer and international cricket umpire, Kumara Dharmasena, has stated that cricketers should adhere to the country’s laws, including tax obligations, and act in compliance with those regulations.
Expressing his perspective on the matter, Dharmasena remarked, “I personally think that if there is a law in the country, we should bow to that law. If we have to pay taxes in the country, we should obey the law and be law-abiding.”
He continued, “I personally do not know how much cricketers earn. When I was playing cricket, I received a good salary. Now I also receive a good salary as an umpire. I think cricket provides a living wage.”
Dharmasena’s comments come in response to a petition filed by the current Sri Lankan cricket team’s ODI and Test captains, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva, at the Court of Appeal. The petition seeks an exemption from paying taxes, challenging the decision of the Inland Revenue Department to levy withholding tax on national team players, categorizing them as employees of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The petition is scheduled to be reviewed today (28) to confirm the facts presented by the cricketers.
I think cricketer s bring income to the country in foreign money to boost our country that is income to our revenues as after the cricketer retires he has ti live on a income locally so why tax them or any sports person who brings revenue to the country
